All rugs are completely handmade from design to finishing and are comprised of thousands of individual knots. Each rug will pass through as many as 180 set of hands before it is complete.
All designs begin with Jenny and before weaving can begin Jenny must carefully decide on the colour and composition of each individual knot, creating a map for the weavers to follow. There can be anywhere from 800,000 to 3,000,000 individual knots in a standard size rug.
Once the producers receive Jenny’s map the raw materials can be prepared. The finest quality wool and silk are expertly hand spun and dyed to Jenny’s carefully chosen colour palette. These centuries old techniques create natural variations in colour and texture that mean that each rug is unique.
Only now can the weaving begin with traditional artisans intricately knotting each individual knot by hand. The more complex the design the smaller the knots need to be and a 3 x 4.2m rug can take a team of 5 weavers up to a year to weave.
Rugs must then be washed and dried in the sun strengthening and cleaning the rug, finally being passed to the highly skilled finishing team where the high and low pile heights are cut and the intricate carving done.
The result is a handcrafted masterpiece that will last for generations.
