What makes a Jenny Jones rug different from other designer rugs?

It’s the storytelling, the craftsmanship, and the quality of materials that truly set our rugs apart. Each rug is considered a piece of art, designed by one lady – an Australian with a passion. Every rug is handmade and can take several months to complete and sometimes up to a year for the more intricate designs. From the first sketch to the final knot, we’re deeply involved in the process and Jenny’s vision drives the design, while our team of highly skilled artisans brings it to life using traditional hand knotting techniques with handspun wool and pure silk. These are heirloom quality pieces that become part of your home’s story.

How do I choose the right rug for my home?

Start by thinking about how you use the space and what kind of feeling you want to create. Key factors to consider would be colour, size & design. We also recommend checking out our online Style Guide, it’s full of useful tips on size, placement and colour. And if you’re not sure where to start, just give us a call or visit one of our showrooms. Our experts are always happy to help.

Are your rugs available in custom sizes or shapes?

The majority of our luxury rugs are available off the floor or to order, so we can create pieces in nearly any dimension or shape, whether it’s rectangular, round, runner or something more architectural to suit hallways. And unlike mass produced rugs, resizing or reshaping a design doesn't diminish its beauty or integrity as we take great care to maintain the flow, symmetry and balance of the artwork, regardless of the shape or scale.

What fibres do you use, and why are they important?

We only use the highest quality handspun wool and pure silk in our rugs. Handspun wool is stronger and more durable than machine spun alternatives as it has a natural resilience and warmth that makes it ideal for both luxurious living rooms and high traffic areas. Pure silk on the other hand adds luminosity, softness and highlights to intricate detailing. Together, these fibres create a rich visual depth and texture that simply can’t be replicated with synthetic materials.

How long does it take to make a rug on average?

Creating a rug as a piece of art is a true labour of love for us. From the initial design concept to the final carving and finishing, your rug passes through the hands of up to 180 skilled artisans. Depending on the complexity and size of your design, the process can take anywhere from 6 to 12 months. For example, a large rug with intricate detailing may require a team of 5 artisan weavers working for 9 months as great quality takes time. We believe good things are worth the wait, and our clients tend to agree.

Do your rugs shed or wear out over time?

All natural fibre rugs shed lightly when first laid, particularly those made with handspun wool. This is completely normal and temporary. With regular vacuuming and care, the shedding will reduce, and your rug will maintain its beauty for many years. In fact, because of the dense knotting and quality of materials, our rugs are designed to last for generations, and many clients pass them down as treasured family pieces.

Can your rugs be cleaned or repaired?

Hand-knotted rugs are incredibly durable and can be professionally cleaned or restored if ever needed. We recommend periodic professional cleaning to preserve the rug’s vibrancy and structure, especially in high traffic areas. If a spill or damage does occur, we can advise on the best course of action, and in many cases, repairs can be done by skilled artisans using traditional methods.

What does ‘hand-knotted’ really mean?

Hand-knotted means exactly that, every single knot in the rug is tied by hand. There are no machines involved in the weaving process and this technique allows for much finer detail, superior quality and a longer lifespan than machine made rugs or tufted alternatives. In a standard size rug, there can be anywhere from 800,000 to over 3 million knots. It’s this time intensive technique that gives our rugs their character, durability and beauty.

Do your rugs support fair trade practices?

Yes, this is incredibly important to us. Our rugs are woven in India and Nepal by artisans who work under ethical, fair-trade conditions. Jenny has spent decades building long-term relationships with weaving communities, and your purchase directly supports programs for education, health, skill development and fair wages. It's about empowering the artists, creating a sustainable future for the people weaving the pieces of art together.

Can I view your rugs in person?

Of course and we’d love to welcome you into our Perth or Melbourne showrooms. We have over 400 rugs on display, so you can explore textures, colours and styles in person, and speak with our design team for personalised advice.
